What is Cataract?
We each have a natural lens inside our eyes. This lens functions as a camera. The lens shapes the light rays which enter the eye so that they land on the retina and aid in providing us with clear vision.
The lens, however, begins to become clouded and lose its transparency as it ages. This is when cataracts first appear. It is similar to gazing through a hazy or dusty windshield as vision begins to decline with cataract development, making objects appear fuzzy, hazy, or less colorful.
What are the Symptoms of Cataracts?
Increased glare and a reduction in night vision are the initial signs of an eye cataract. Your eyesight will start to get blurry as your cataract progresses, which will impede your daily activities. In situations of early cataracts, your eyes may not appear different from the outside or may not display any unusual coloration or spot. The white area in the middle of the eye is only seen after the cataract has fully developed or has become white.
How Cataract is treated?
The sole therapy for treating cataracts is cataract surgery. Using a phacoemulsification machine, we may remove the cataract from a little incision formed during the operation, which is similar to a daycare procedure and only requires a 2 mm incision. The same little incision is then used to insert an intraocular lens. Less than 10 minutes are required to complete the process. There is no need for an injection because drops are used to anesthetize the eye during this procedure. Additionally, there is no eye patch used following the treatment, and the patient can return to regular activities the same evening.
What is the cause of Cataract Surgery?
Cataracts are caused by changes in the proteins that make up the lens of the eye. These changes can cause the lens to become cloudy or opaque, which can make it difficult for light to pass through the lens and reach the retina.
Several factors can contribute to the development of cataracts, including:
- Age: Cataracts are more common in older people, and the risk increases as people get older.
- Genetics: Some types of cataracts may run in families, suggesting a genetic component.
- Environmental factors: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, smoking, and exposure to certain chemicals or toxins may increase the risk of cataracts.
- Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity may increase the risk of cataracts.
- Eye injuries: Trauma to the eye can cause cataracts to develop.
- Medications: Long-term use of certain medications such as corticosteroids may increase the risk of cataracts.
It is important to note that cataracts can also develop for unknown reasons, and some people may be more susceptible to cataracts than others. Regular eye exams can help detect cataracts early and ensure proper treatment.
How much rest is needed after Cataract Surgery?
Cataract surgery is a daycare procedure. The day following surgery, one can return to work. After surgery, patients shouldn’t wash their hair for a few days. must refrain from demanding activity for a few days following the surgery.
What Does Cataract Surgery Cost?
The price of cataract surgery varies from hospital to hospital and is dependent on the IOL (Lens). Cataract surgery costs in Iris Eye Care range from 10k to 1+ lacs.
