What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma surgery is a serious eye disease that damages the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Increased pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure, often causes damage to the optic nerve.
What are the types of glaucoma?
There are several types of glaucoma, but the two most common types are primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and angle-closure glaucoma (ACG).
- Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG): POAG is one of the known glaucoma types. This happens when the drainage tubes within the eyes become clogged over time, causing increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in our eyes. POAG usually grows slowly and painlessly, often causing no noticeable symptoms until significant damage occurs to the optic nerve.
- Angle-Closure Glaucoma (ACG): ACG occurs when the iris (the colored part of the eye) blocks the drainage tubes in the eye, causing a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. ACG can be an emergency and requires immediate treatment if such a condition occurs.
What is the cause of glaucoma?
- Increased intraocular pressure: Increased pressure within the eye is the most important risk factor for glaucoma. When the pressure inside our eyes becomes too high, it can damage the optic nerve, causing vision loss.
- Age: The risk of developing glaucoma increases as a person gets older. People over the age of 60 are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma.
- Family history:If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with glaucoma, your risk of developing the disease is higher.
- Race:People of African, Hispanic, and Asian descent are more likely to develop certain types of glaucoma.
- Medical conditions:People with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, are more likely to develop glaucoma.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
- Vision loss: Glaucoma can cause gradual vision loss, usually starting at the edge of vision and eventually affecting central vision.

Blurred vision: As the optic nerve becomes damaged, it can cause blurry or hazy vision.

Halos around lights: Some people with glaucoma may see halos around lights, especially at night.

Eye pain: acute angle-closure glaucoma can cause severe eye pain, along with headaches and nausea.

Redness in the eye: acute angle-closure glaucoma can also cause redness in the eye.
What are the treatments for glaucoma?
The treatment options for glaucoma include:

Eye drops: Medications in the form of eye drops are often the first line of treatment for glaucoma. These medications work by reducing the production of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) or improving the drainage of fluid, which helps lower IOP.

Laser therapy: Doctors often use laser therapy to treat open-angle glaucoma. There are many types of laser therapy, the major ones being trabeculoplasty and iridotomy. These procedures use a laser to increase the clearance of aqueous humor from the eye, which has been shown to lower IOP.

Surgery: If eye drops and laser therapy are not helping to lower IOP, surgery may be necessary. The most common surgery for glaucoma is a trabeculectomy, in which a small hole is made in the eye to drain the aqueous fluid.

Micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS): MIGS is a newer type of surgery that uses tiny devices to improve the drainage of aqueous humor from the eye. These devices are typically implanted during a minimally invasive procedure, which can be performed in an outpatient setting.
